Antique Victorian Amethyst cameo pendant (c. 1890)
Greek Legend of Amethyst:
Amethyst was a fair and virtuous maiden who infatuated Dionysus (god of intoxication and revelry). Dionysus loved her, but she was dedicated to her piety and wanted a more appropriate suitor.  He could not understand this, being a God he was used to getting his way and was relentlessness in his pursuit of her love.  When Artemis realized that Amethyst was serous about keeping her heart pure, the goddess transformed her into a statue of perfect stone. Dionysus stopped partying in his grief and wept, spilling his wine. His tears and wine infused the statue with its rich purple hue, now known to us as amethyst.
